Their story
Richard I, of the House of Plantagenet, was born at Beaumont Palace on September 15, 1157. Known for his military prowess, he led the Third Crusade, commanding forces in significant campaigns in the Holy Land. Though his reign was marked by extensive periods abroad, he was a pivotal figure in European politics of the late 12th century. His strategic leadership and martial reputation shaped relations between kingdoms. He held the title of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, a reflection of his dominion. Richard I died at Châlus on April 13, 1199, leaving a complex legacy as a powerful, yet often absent, monarch.
