Their story
Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester, born at Woodstock Palace on January 7, 1355, was the youngest son of King Edward III of England, a prominent member of the House of Plantagenet. His life was deeply intertwined with the political landscape of his era. As Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, he held significant administrative and military responsibilities. He was a leading figure among the Lords Appellant, a group of powerful magnates who challenged the authority of his nephew, King Richard II. This period of intense political struggle ultimately led to his premature death in Calais on September 8, 1397, a significant event in the complex history of the English monarchy.
