Their story
John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute, was born at Mount Stuart House on June 30, 1744. A distinguished member of the House of Stuart, his life spanned a period of significant change within the British Isles. While he held the title of 1st Marquess of Bute, it is important to clarify that he was not Duke of York, nor a monarch of Scotland, England, or Ireland. These titles belonged to other prominent Stuarts. He passed away in Geneva on November 16, 1814, leaving a legacy rooted in his contributions and lineage within the British aristocracy.
