Their story
Philip III, born in Madrid in 1578, ascended to the thrones of Spain and Portugal, reigning as monarch of both kingdoms. He also held the titles of King of Sardinia and Monarch of Castile and Leon, having previously served as Prince of Asturias. His reign, which concluded with his death in Madrid in 1621, saw him preside over a vast and complex empire. While his father, Philip II, had been a more hands-on ruler, Philip III delegated much of the day-to-day governance to his *validos*, or chief ministers. His time on the throne is notable for a period of relative peace in Europe, though internal challenges and economic pressures persisted within his domains.
