Their story
Charles V, born in Ghent in 1500, was a pivotal figure in 16th-century European history. Inheriting vast territories, he became Lord of the Netherlands, monarch of the Crown of Aragon, and Monarch of Castile and Leon. His reign saw him crowned Holy Roman Emperor, a title reflecting his significant influence across a fragmented continent. He also held the title of King of Sardinia. Charles V faced numerous political and religious challenges throughout his rule, navigating the complexities of a burgeoning global empire. He retired to the Monastery of Yuste, where he died in 1558.
