Their story

John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, was born on September 12, 1847, at Mount Stuart House. A descendant of the House of Stuart, he held historical titles including Duke of York, monarch of Scotland, monarch of England, and King of Ireland. His life was marked by significant scholarly and architectural pursuits. He devoted substantial resources to the restoration of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch, demonstrating a deep interest in medieval art and design. A convert to Catholicism, he was also a noted benefactor of the Church. The Marquess passed away on October 9, 1900, on the Isle of Bute.
