Their story
John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute, was born at Dumfries House on August 10, 1793. Descended from the noble House of Stuart, he inherited extensive estates and titles, including the Earldom of Dumfries and the Marquessate of Bute. His life's work was particularly marked by his profound influence on the development of Cardiff. He recognized the potential of the South Wales coalfields and invested heavily in the construction of Cardiff Docks, transforming the town into a major port for coal export. This visionary endeavor significantly shaped the economic landscape of the region. He passed away at Cardiff Castle on March 18, 1848, leaving a lasting legacy in industrial development and urban growth.
