Their story
Murdoch Stewart, born in 1362, was a prominent figure of the House of Stuart. While he held significant noble rank, his historical impact is often misunderstood. He was indeed a Duke, but not of York, and he never reigned as monarch of Scotland, England, or Ireland. His life, marked by the complex politics of 15th-century Scotland, saw him elevated to the Dukedom of Albany. He succeeded his father in this role, eventually becoming Regent of Scotland during the captivity of King James I. However, a shift in political fortunes led to his arrest and execution for treason in 1425 at Stirling, bringing an end to a life deeply intertwined with the machinations of Scottish power.
