Their story

Alexander Stewart, Duke of Rothesay, was born prematurely at Holyrood Palace on October 25, 1430. As the eldest son of King James I of Scotland, he was immediately heir apparent to the Scottish throne. The birth of a male heir was a moment of hope for the Stuart dynasty. However, Alexander’s life was tragically brief. He bore the title Duke of Rothesay from birth, but his delicate health meant he did not long survive. He died in infancy, having lived for less than a month. His death was a personal loss for the royal family and left his younger brother, the future James II, as heir.
